Position Overview

The EMS Quality Improvement & Emergency Coordinator (QIEC) is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of emergency medical services within the Berkeley Fire Department. Working in alignment with the Alameda County Continuous Quality Improvement (EMS CQI) Standard and Plan, the QIEC plays a vital role in advancing patient care, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.

Through comprehensive audits and performance reviews, the QIEC assesses EMS service delivery, identifying opportunities for enhancement and ensuring adherence to best practices. By facilitating staff training and professional development, this role helps EMS personnel maintain and refine their skills, fostering a workforce committed to excellence. Providing real-time performance feedback allows for continuous learning and improvement, ensuring that each emergency response meets the highest standards of care.


Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree

  • Four years of clinical experience within the emergency medical field

  • Paramedic Certificate or higher

  • Possess a Basic Life Support instructor certificate (BLS-C)

    * For those who do not possess this certificate, the department will be hosting a remote instructor class berfor the closing of this application period.

    Ability to Obtain & Maintain Certifications in:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life support (ACLS)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support ( PALS) or Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP)

  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) or equivalants.

Chain of Command and Priority Levels

The EMS QI EC operates within the established chain of command, reporting to designated EMS Assistant Chief, while aligning duties with departmental priorities. Task management is structured to balance urgent audits and compliance reviews with long-term quality improvement initiatives, ensuring both immediate operational needs and ongoing enhancement efforts are effectively addressed.
